Hi folks,

Hi folks,

Here's my take on a profession that "could" be a thief but could also be any other non-spell-using, non-Knight, non-Barbarian profession. The nature of the character is determined by the skills chosen by the player so he could be a rogue, tracker, woodsman, smuggler, highwayman etc.

Some explanations: I don't use the updated rules - just the first two books and The Lands of Legend. I don't like the professions that came after and I find Stealth and Perception to be abilities that encroach to heavily on the Difficulty Factor rules which I consider to be so lightweight and flexible, I want to see them in use as much as possible. I also use yards instead of metres (I'm British but it just seems wrong to use the metric system for this game); I sometimes use battle mats with squares equaling 2-yards so every movement rate, spell and weapon range is now divisible by 2 (I had some spare time on my hands...)

Hi Mike,

I really like it - it's an elegant way to introduce skills to DW. If anything, I think it's a little underpowered against the other basic professions (barbarians, knights, mystics, and sorcerers) and would allow skills to be taken multiple times to improve the character's ability score for the purposes of attempting the test (but limit the bonus to the character's level so there's no benefit, for example, in a first rank character taking lockpicking three times).

I'd also be tempted to allow the Vagabond to gain 1 skill per level if you implemented this - allow the Vagabond to get very good at things to allow the player to specialise their character as they see fit.

One thing I found about introducing such a broad player-makes-up-the-skills skills system is that it quickly became apparent that a skills index is needed to ensure balance and consistency in how the skills are used in play. You may want to give some thought to what the Vagabond skills might be - even just one-liner descriptions.
