The road runs along one side of a 3m by 3m clearing at the centre of which is the well, the clearing is bounded on the other three sides by thick foliage extending some 20m back around the well in all directions.

OOC: I will direct my Premonition toward the undergrowth to the left-hand side of the clearing (looking toward the exit). The ESP of course is unidirectional.

Kuublu is a bit agitated by Ammu's distraction. But he'll stand close by in case he needs to intercept anything. Donkey reins in one hand and javelin in the other.

Ammu has the sudden impression of a number of animalistic minds nearby...how many he cannot say..but he gets a distinct impression of hunger.

Ammu pulls his knobkerrie from his belt and begins backing slowly from the clearing.

"We are being hunted, son." he says softly, scanning the bushes all the while.

"What hunts man? If it is a man eater then it is our duty to kill it! Or innocents will perish in its jaws!"

Kuublu hoists his javelin and stands between his donkey. If it runs Kuublu will leave it. Hopefully it should know better than to run away from the only thing that will hold off any predator.

Kuublu quickly takes his shield from its position on the side of the donkey and holds it before him.

As the men back away a number of spotted forms slink from the trees....hyena.

At first Ammu is very confused...he has spent his whole life around such creatures...to see them attack men is unusually...to do so in the heat of the day without the cover of darkness is unheard of..but then he notes other things: ropy saliva spills from their jaws and large weeping sores surround their eyes, nose and lips....it is the mind-eater...he has seen it before among the scavenger dogs of his people and heard tales of men who had to be killed before they harmed their families...to be bitten is to allow the mind-eater within oneself...

I begin to wrap my pack around my left hand and wrist so it forms a thick mitt while continuing to back away. If a hyena attacks I will let it grab that hand so it's bite cannot reach my flesh; I suspect it will hold on and try to tear away at me in the way that hyena and dogs do. I will then brain it with my knobkerrie while it cannot defend.

"These beasts have the sickness of the mind-eater. Do not let them bite you, not even a scratch, or you will become like them." I say to Kuublu.
"I hope you are a warrior son" I add. "I am not, so any battle plans you have I would like to hear!".

I am trying hard to resist the urge to turn tail and flee. I know that will all but guarantee that we are chased down.
