The companions gathered together and discussed their options, resolving to take Malim to the capital as originally planned. As they spoke Etwa approached and asked if perhaps a favour could be called upon.

After some discussion it was decided that Pulgil and Ak'ululu would escort the old priest to a nearby shrine in a neighbouring village so that he could meet with another of his faith and discuss the treasures of Nyami found and Etwas audience with the ancient power. It was asked that they attempt to catch the others up on the way to the capital when they were done.

Kuublu and Chiemeka made ready to depart having gifted their items and livestock to other members of the village and herded a still lightly limping Malim along with them, at the last moment Kuublu invited the newcomer to join them.

After several days travel west Kuublu and the others came to a waypoint and decided to rest a little, tired of roadside camps. The companions made themselves comfortably in Igha village, a larger trade town with dedicated housing for merchants and others travelling through.

Kuublus titles secured them good lodgings and they were able to build further goodwill by chasing off a pair of leopards that were harassing the communities rather expansive flock of goats.

In thanks they were invitated to the headmans house for a cup of palm wine with the headman Oker, he spoke of the local governors fort built on the nearby rise and bid them stay the night and relax.

Kuublu is glad to be of service. Maybe he's got no head for bartering and bad with money/donkeys and gifting hardware. Kuublu is glad to drink more palm wine since chasing leopards is tiresome work. He gestures to Chiemeka and Malim to join him.

The four men drink and talk late into the night though it is obvious that Oker believes few of their tales are wholly true. Then they retire to their beds...

As the sun rises over the fields around the village, you are already out on the village boundary, exercising, studying and practicing your combat drills. You are surprised to see Oker, running towards you, his somewhat stocky frame and large stomach do not seem to slow him much though.

He stops for a few moments to catch his breath, then calls out pointing away towards the fort , “ Kuublu, Chiemeka and Uruka. Please, come with me to the fort. Buzwe, Servant of the King and Governor, is there. He wishes to speak with you!”

Assume Kuublu is unarmoured and only carrying his Assegai. He quickly gestures to the others to follow and heads off after Oker.

Chiemeka picks up his staff and takes his usual place at Kuublu's shoulder. Addressing Oker, he asks, "Do you know why we have been summoned?"

" I do not but it must be important. Perhaps he heard Prince Kuublu was here?"

The trio and Oker made their way up the dusty trail towards the crest of the hill where the stone and daub fort stood bound and reinforced with acias and a palisade. The two soldiers posted outside in their red dyed leather kilts and iron rings about their wrists and neck raised their spears and shields as the four approached but recognising Oker simply waved them through.

A small troop of men drilled in the square inside the walls and Kuublu was impressed with their prowess and formation.

Oker ushered the companions into the long hall of the central fort.

The Governor, Buzwe, waited there impatiently, pacing before the desk he customarily sat at; he appears to take you all in at a glance but neither introduces himself or address you. He is a broad-shouldered man with a fierce stern face and a number of old battle scars, Kuublu sees from his scarifications and iron rings that he had served in wartime for the Empire, and he wastes no time on pleasantries.

“Up in hills by the stand of forest there is a valley that the locals call Hilis Bonde. They believe it to be a magic place, and won’t go near it. I need some people who aren’t afraid of villagers fireside tales.” He hurls a bag of small gold ingots down onto the table. “Fifteen. You get five now, and the rest after you’ve done the job. There may be other treasure or what not along the way, and you can keep one tenth of any that you find. Interested?”

Uruka follows them into the room to listen to the governor's brief. Seeing the demeanor of the battle hardened warrior, Uruka knows he is not a man to bother with trivialities. Hearing his brief, Uruka knows that he is also a miser- a bad combination in an employer. However, it is more important to grow in power for now. The slight can always be look into In future.

"I am not sure about my new companions but I am willing to be of service to you, Taata*."

*Honorific for an older man in Urukas culture.

"I would be happy to. But to disturb sacred places and the spirits.... have they interfered with the lives of the living? Chiemeka and I have seen remarkable things but what shall we do? Are the lands not fertile enough to sustain the people? That you wish to expand your lands into this 'magical place'?"

Buzwe harrumphed impatiently but he acknowledged Kuublus status by giving a slight inclination of his head to the younger man, he ignores Uruka's words completely.

" None of that! Indeed it is for the people we do this."

“The Empires tax collector passed through Orha village from here two days ago, heading for the capital. He had the taxes and tribute of the region in his cart. A few hours later, his ass limped back into Orha without him. The taxes were missing also, and a fine knobkerrie I was sending as a gift for my brother. He must have been thrown from the cart by the forest—perhaps a hyena frightened his ass. His neck can be broken for all I care, but I want that knobkerrie back. And if the taxes aren’t recovered, the villagers will have to pay twice this year. Not a pleasant thought, with the dry season coming on.”

His scowl tells you it is not the peasants’ welfare that overly concerns him.
