Jaafan burst from the jungle and found himself face to face with three startled looking men, two whirling slings and another carrying a thin iron blade....he released the two children at his side to continue running as he faced the men.

Damian May wrote:

Kuublu and Chiemeka readied their slings as Uruka recovered his weapon and rejoined them, they were just about to release their stones at the approaching figures when they were suddenly revealed to be frightened humans and not attacking Volucreth.

Kharille wrote:
Kuublu catches his own sling shop, he hands his sling to the stranger and drops any the rocks that he gathered as he readies his Assegai and looks beyond the humans....

Ultstadt wrote:
Jaafan opened his mouth to speak until the sling was shoved at him. He took it for a moment, confused, and then shook his head.

"You men, you are armed! Are war band hunting the Volucreth?! Come! Let us attack these bird folk while they are disorganized in their attempts to collect the slaves!" He shouted as he raised his stolen volucreth blade and wheeled around to lead the way back toward his former captors.

Kharille wrote:
Kuublu clutches at the strangers arm.

"We are too few! Lets grab the children and save what we can!"

Kuublu drops the sling and reaches out for one of the kids. He gives the others a look before proceeding to run....

Chiemeka nods to Kuublu and heads after him.

Ultstadt wrote:
As the stranger’s arm tugs him back, Jaafan turns to them with a quizzical expression. If they were too few now, their numbers were unlikely to change soon, and the disorganization caused by his slave escape would end and leave them at nothing but a worse disadvantage.

He opened his mouth to speak, stopped, turned to look back toward the volucreth camp, turned back to the strangers, and frowned. After a moment he made to follow them, hoping that perhaps they were a vanguard instead of merely cowards. He looked down at his new Volucreth blade and the cloth rags his captors had allowed him to wear, making a dissapproving clicking sound at the sight.

Uruka helps with the children his enhanced strength allowing him to carry perhaps two easily.

Jaafan sees with shock the man without the sling, only slightly more muscular than himself but with limbs strangely corded and heavily veined lift the children off the ground with ease.

A dozen or so more people break through the foliage, Jaafan herds them before him as he runs after the other three men now retreating through the jungle.

The dozen or so of them bolt through the undergrowth away from the Volucreth, the captives eyes were wild and staring about as they ran.....

One of the women called out, " Where are we running to?"

Ahead Jaafan and Kuublu suddenly glimpsed movement some 50m ahead through the brush but they could not make out what it was....

Kuublu, clutching the kid and assegai gestures and hisses at the group to be silent. They need to listen to make out what they're advancing into....

After a brief hesitation Kuublu directs them (left) to keep running perpendicular to their original course.

For a moment Jaafan stops in confusion at the limbs and muscles of the stranger, but time waits for no man when escaping slavers, and he chose to be confused later.

As the woman calls out, Jaafan responds,"Away from the Volucreth is good enough for now. Keep moving. We'll choose a final destination when we are not pursued. Keep together, stay close." he urges. There was strength in numbers, and Jaafan hoped that this group might gain enough strength to return to his former captors and slit their avian throats.

When one of the strangers urges the group to be silent and directs them left, Jaafan crouched down in the undergrowth. He signaled for the Stranger and the other captives to head left, but he felt they could not afford to avoid possible aid. He makes to creep forward until he can spot what the movement is. If it is Terror Birds or more Volucreth then he at least knows to flee to the left to follow the rest. If it is human than the more the better, and he could call after the group to have them stop. Either way such a scouting attempt would only risk his own life and cost a few moments.

The group led by Kuublu headed left as Jaafan hesitated for a moment and moved forward, his keen ears could hear the the sound of movement behind him still some way a way but ever moment counted. Risking it he moved forward and peered through the brush.

A dozen or so large grey and ivory striped forms moved through the jungle on four long muscular legs, their heads were crowned with a cluster of horns and long thick tails hung straight out behind them. They were eating huge mouthfuls of foliage with their massive beak-like mouths.

Jaafan had an idea as he looked through the underbrush at the beasts. He began sneaking his way around to the far side of the herd. He hoped he might startle them and send them stampeding toward the incoming Volucreth. Even if the bird folk weren’t trampled or gored, the stampede should at least cover the tracks of the fleeing slaves.

Jaafan moved quietly around the herd, but apparently not quietly enough as the largest of the beasts raised its head and looked in his direction with a disgruntled snort, it stamped its forelegs and lowed rolling its shoulders as blood flowed to its face and neck flushing bright scarlet patterns about its horns and beak.

Jaafans attempted to frighten the creature into running but his display of aggression was rather undone by a misplaced foot, the rest of the herd began to mill behind the large one threatening Jaafan and two of the juveniles began lowing in fear. To his left he could hear what he assumed was the Volucreth approaching, to his right the rest of the humans continued to run on...

The now scarlet and grey bull lowered its crest of horns menacingly and rumbled at Jaafan....

Jaafan made one last shout in an attempt, not to threaten the herd, but to further draw it’s ire, and then he took off running in the direction of the Volucreth. If he could get the herd to chase him toward the bird folk, then at the very least he might save the captives at the risk of his own trampling.

Jaafan managed to enrage the large animal further and it lunged at him, giving chase as he ran, it was followed by two of the adolescent males, the rest of the herd maintained their stationary ring formation around the young.

His foot slipped in the mud and he was smacked heavily in the side by a heavy beak ( -2 hp), he powered on... drawing well ahead then suddenly the Volucreth were in front of him their huge blades drawn. A moment later the pursuing animals crashed out of the brush, plowing into the lead Volucreth and smashing it to the ground and side-swiping another as it emerged from the brush. Jaafan attempted to dive to the side to escape but was snagged on a huge tree fern and found himself facing a Volucreth which had had the same idea; its plumage was all standing on end and scintillated with a rainbow of bright colours, its strange square blade, almost as long as himself, swept towards him.

Jaafan hit the creature in its upper arm and in response its heavy blade ploughed into his left shoulder, the Volucreths eyes were looking about it for its companions but it seemed the majority were busy with the animals....Jaafan knew however he could not take too many more blows like that...

( -6 hp)

The trio led/carried the former prisoners that were accompanying them, it seemed from their dress that most of the prisoners were from the burning village they had started at but others were dressed in a more western plains pattern...it seemed the Bird Kings roamed far in search slaves. It was some minutes of running when Kuublu again called a temporary halt and the three listened.....there were lowing aggraveted calls of some large creatures behind them and slightly north and even further away at the edge of hearing the voices of Volucreth calling out....

It seemed they had evaded their pursuers for the moment....though the man that had originally emerged from the scrub carrying the children was nowhere to be seen....

Kuublu hands the child to Chiemeka. He tells the others to go to a known meeting spot. He will head back to see if he can figure out what happened to the stranger....
