For my own house rulebook I used public domain art from mediaeval manuscripts which I then traced to make them all of a consistent quality and appearance. It worked reasonably well but obviously was no substitute for commissioned artwork. I'd be happy to share the images if anybody is interested.

Speaking as someone that's looked for good public domain fantasy art, there is very little out there - if you can't draw (or afford to pay artists yourself), you're basically screwed.

Just a note for people who are looking into this area, it is worth familiarising yourself with the Creative Commons licences. It greatly opens the amount of free art available to you under certain conditions - most commonly that the artist must be acknowledged, and that the work its used in must be noncommercial, or that it can't be altered (note - not all images have all these restrictions, some only have one of them - some have none of them).

With Cadaver Draconis I had to treat it as a commercial publication even though it's not being sold, but most fanworks will have no difficulty being considered non-commercial unless people are charging for them (which you can't do under the Serpent King licence).

One of the best ways I've found to search for images that can be used in this way is to use the following text string in a Google image search (in the example I am searching for images of Knights).

"Some rights reserved" site:deviantart.com knight

Deviant Art is a treasure trove, although the quality is variable and a lot of the good stuff doesn't have a particularly DW feel - but if you look around carefully, you can find some good stuff. These three images are all available for use in a noncommercial document, for example, provided they are unaltered, and the artist is acknowledged. And to me they are DW enough (I might prefer a little more grittiness).

(the last one isn't a Knight, but it came up through searching for them).

If somebody does take this approach, check the specific image is covered under the licence - because of the way this search works, sometimes it shows images that aren't themselves covered but which are related to others that are.

I'm sure I'd be interested.

That's where I get a lot of my images as well. For Cadaver Draconis, I didn't clean them up as much as I might have for some other purposes, simply because of lack of time. If I had done everything I might have liked to do, it wouldn't have been released yet, and it might not have been released this year.

Bit of CD discussion elsewhere. I think one of the posts will make Jiminy happy.

SO are we going to move on the CD artwork or leave as is for now Mr. Hately?

I'd like to see us work through all the paths one at a time here to see how they can be improved first. Then look at a possible V2.0 in a wide range of areas.
