It seems that the previous owners of http://www.dragonwarriors.co.uk and http://www.dragonwarriors.uk failed to renew their registrations within a comfortable window after they expired, leaving them ripe for plucking.

So I plucked.

I've offered the domains to the Serpent Kings and Dave Morris (NOT for profit, I hasten to add!), should either of them have ambitions to expand Dragon Warriors' online presence, but given that this was a whimsical purchase (I was idly browsing available domain names for my next big nothing-to-do-with-Dragon-Warriors project) without any clear plan for how to use these domains, does anyone have any suggestions?

My current thinking is that content from the Cobwebbed Forest for canonical Dragon Warriors would migrate to the dragonwarriors.uk domain, and my own house rules and non-canonical stuff would stay in the Forest, but that almost seems like squandering the opportunity to do something a little bit more ambitious with these domains.

The sky's the limit - feel free to suggest whatever you'd like to see and leave me to figure out how it might get done...

For example:
  • You want a site that provides a comprehensive interactive online RPG environment, complete with DW-specific in-browser tools for near-realtime interactive chat/play with other gamers across the globe? Think (non-graphical) Roll20 tailored and optimised for DW.
  • You want a complete, searchable, cross-referenced index of all Dragon Warriors rules?
  • You want a CYOA-style/Sryth-style interactive open world adventure game set in Legend?
  • You want the Cobwebbed Forest completely rebranded and relaunched on a slick mobile-responsive site?
  • ANYTHING?

Licensing/copyright hurdles might be harder to solve than purely technical ones and anything too graphically intensive is probably outside my capabilities too (but try me...), but feel free to set your sights high in this thread!

Hm... I'm more into something interactive. Not sure how this would work but how about a mini gamebook that grants you access to a chat forum. However, bearing in mind how dead the community is, or at least I might say subdued and quiet maybe some flashy site with lots of dragwars themed 'art' might drive the fan base numbers up.

Well, I don't have a budget for art, but I have been toying with the idea of buying the William McAusland art packs, and they're not too expensive.

A gamebook-style experience in a Sryth-style framework is certainly something I'd like to explore. I've even dabbled with something of that ilk on the Cobwebbed Forest (not currently in the public area in case you were minded to have a furtle for it). I'm not sure what you mean by granting access to a chat forum, though - can you expand on that idea, please?

Just thinking out loud. A 30 section gamebook section which may have embarrassing consequences, and if you get through you get access to an online chat section. However since we're not that active, and I probably account for maybe 30% or more of all new threads on hiabour it might be just "After braving the underwurlde you find Kharille."

Just thinking out loud, not sure how people would like to go through the 'maze' just to reach the chat section. Might work for a newcomer new to dragon warriors. You could always make an option, register and get keys to the chatroom, or brave the maze and an anonymous visitor.

That's an interesting concept. I like the idea of having to "explore" the site in a game to get access to various functionality or resources although, as you say, with so few active users, it might be a difficult balance to make it an entertaining experience without frustrating the few stalwarts left. Conversely, it's possible to create a system whereby the more of the site you explore, the more advantages you gain in-game - But either option comes back to my original question - what functionality should there be on the site to discover (or used to generate advantage)? I wouldn't necessarily want to compete with the Hiabuor forum so anything of that ilk would have to offer a unique experience or niche function to make the effort of building a forum worthwhile.

As for your user stats, I had a little look and your contributions account for 17.71% of all posts, 55.45% of which are to the Dragon Warriors discussion (the bulk of the rest, presumably, are in the PBF game going on elsewhere on this site). A very healthy contribution to our community, and very much appreciated :).

Oh yeah, sounds like too much work already. I might draw upon stuff from the wiki, but then that stuff is already available. Maybe an rpg style introduction to new professions, you find a prisoner bound in chains, he smiles as fire dances around his bound hands. Or maybe you enter the comic room where you get exposed to the full brunt of kharille humour. Its just an idea for now. Maybe something like battlepits of krarth.

Maybe an alternative 'prize' like lewd dragwars art that'll fire up the imagination of potential dragwars fans. Amour factor 4 chainmail bikinis and all....

That's an interesting idea - a gamified means by which visitors to the site could get exposed to the glorious breadth and majesty of the game - the creatures, the lore, the professions, the locations, etc. Something of an interactive tour, perhaps

Ha ha. I think the Serpent Kings' Fan Policy has something to say about that ;)

Some hotlinks to the fan-made material ( once we get them finished and up on the Ambulum store page on Drivethru.)

I honestly wouldn't mind getting all the stuff on the wiki elsewhere as well just as a backup.

I'd like to run more PbPs for folks but I'm not sure the demand is there.

Kharilles idea for an ( optional?) Playthrough to open upsite features sounds fun.

Well, when I say a 30 section game book style thing, there would be the option to just go to the lower floors, quick access. But if a visitor wants to visit the 'library' or to view some of the more privileged upper floors maybe they should contribute their own material. Or, if they're willing to brave the many instant deaths and annoying traps that teleport them to square 1... Yeah, that might just destroy the limited fan base we have.....

I agree about the Wiki - I worry about it, too. It's a repository that could easily be lost and I don't think anyone administers it any more. However, it would be a nightmare to try and get all the contributors to agree to host it elsewhere, assuming they could even still be contacted. That doesn't mean to say there can't be a *new* wiki, tho, and it's something I'll think about.

It all comes down to marketing, so very doable if it's simple enough for new players to engage - I like the idea of trying to create a custom Dragon Warriors platform, but I doubt my programming ability could rival anything Roll20 can do (I certainly can't do graphics). However, Roll20 also has a lot of complexity born from it's customisability, so there may be a balance to be struck. Plus, I can do something much better than a mere forum thread, so I'll add that to my list.

It does, and I have in mind a series of short interactive tutorials on some of the basics (creating a character, combat, magic, etc.), followed by a short, interactive, solo 'experience' that takes you through all the rules you've learned in the short tutorial. I've already started sketching out the workflows and content, so that might be the first thing to appear.
