Was reading about slingers at this link:

http://warfarehistorynetwork.com/daily/ ... the-sling/

Thought it might be grounds to develop a profession that is mobile, relies on missiles and can disengage from combat easily.

Other links for inspiration:

I see them differently. Or maybe I need to reread the hunter rules. But just thinking of dedicated slingers. Who probably herd goats. I think David in the bible was a goat herder.

David herded sheep. He was known as a shepherd. ;)

And what you are thinking about - skirmishers - are historically as much trained (whether well or poorly) soldiers as the heavy infantry. Don't think they were goat-herders. And in addition to slings, they were probably also armed with shortswords and perhaps a couple of javelins too.

To some extent I've always felt that Barbarians were some kind of light infantry. The difference doesn't seem so apparent since they can be so heavily armoured with chainmail. Maybe making Chainmail a skill would deter other professions from wearing it.

Always thought a light infantry that uses terrain would be in order. Or maybe we can create a 'scout' class that can't wear much more than AF3 ringmail with more mobility and terrain bonuses. I know people say Knights are still mobile, but its a fact that a lightly armed skirmisher can outrun hoplites, and I feel this is something that doesn't factor into the dragwars system.

Actually doesn't fit into any system when I think about it... but hey, its historically accurate....

hi all!
I am eager to see an example what could be this slinger profession. But how are the damages of a sling : (d6) 3 ?? (in this case it sounds weak versus armoured fighters...) :(

Perhaps thats why slingers seemed to become obsolete. Ancient battles only. Not sure if they made much of a contribution around say, 15th century. I think wiki mentioned that they totally lost it when firearms came about. Seems, according to the reading you needed to train well on them like bowmen did.

Might be the ideal profession for halflings....
