DW Book 6, page 40 refers to "silver Matapans" as the currency of Ferromaine, but is silent on other coinage. (I suspect this was Dave Morris making a subtle reference to a famous naval battle...) I am tempted to say that Ferromaine now mints a gold Ducat (an equivalent of the Gold Crown), while the equivalent of the Copper Penny is officially known as the Centesimo; but more often referred to as a Piccolo (pl. Piccoli).* * Borrowing a term found in J J Norwich's "A History of Venice." Unless anyone has other ideas? ![]() |

Not sure why, but I really like "Piccolo" as the official name for the penny, not just the nickname. Ducat is a great word too. Makes me think of The Masque of Mandragora for some reason. Cheers, -Kyle |

Quote: Not sure why, but I really like "Piccolo" as the official name for the penny, not just the nickname. I have to confess I only got "Centesimo" by putting "Penny" into Google translate and seeing what came up. Quote: Makes me think of The Masque of Mandragora for some reason. Well... The story was set in Italy (San Martino)... |
