Quoting from page 176 of the new DW rulebook:
"Alaflak, built in seven concentric rings corresponding to the seven Elements of Ta-ashim philosophy…"

Has anyone come across what these elements are? Or have any idea what they might be?
(Just wondering...)

I'd say it's based on the seven pillars of Shia Islam ( Sunnis have five pillars).

The Assassin Trances correspond to the 7 elements.

<Quickly checks>
"Each of these trances is linked to one of the seven universal Elements which the Assassins believe constitute all things."
DW Book 4, page 16.

Well... There you go. Thanks again! :D

Does this mean that non-Ta'ashim Assassins don't have the seven trances, or that they co-opted the seven trances from Ta'ashim Assassins? Or perhaps the Ta'ashim faith took the seven elements from pre-Ta'ashim Assassins?

Cheers,

-Kyle

Who knows? Who's going to ask them to find out? ;)

Probably this. Perhaps the Ta'ashim philosophy developed from observation of a "real" effect in the world of Legend. Thus, the trances can be developed by Assassins anywhere, but only in Ta'ashim have these Elements been incorporated into a general philosophy.
(There may be lost ancient Emphidian schools of philosophy that explored similar avenues.)

Nah, just means DW is a somewhat simplistic, but systemically inflexible system that generalises a lot to reduce complexity, and relies on player creativity and interpretation when applying the rules outside of their stereotypical context.

If we were to flesh out the world of Legend without the constraints of game rules, Marijah Assassins would be quite distinct from Clan Harbinger in terms of specialised, supernatural abilities, though no doubt would share some similar techniques for simply killing targets and sneaking about.

I suspect they would. An opportunity for someone to have a go at making them different... Like someone did with the barbarians. ;)
