Yeah, those forensic science books are orrible' to look at. Unless you have a stuffed toy or chair to deflect sword blows...

To me this is what the base-level Defence boils down to; flinching and putting your hands up. A shield, a stout pair of mail mittens, or even a chair or saucepan would make this a practical Defence even against an armed opponent.

Yes - precisely. This is why I don't consider someone wielding a chair, saucepan, plank of wood (i.e. anything that can block the incoming blow) to be unarmed. But, as you say, when you have nothing but your bare hands, that's when "defensive wounds" occur... If you don't dodge out of the way (which can take some nimble footwork), the chances are you're going to get cut/battered.

There's even a tactic known as "burying the blade" where you deliberately take the blow in order to get past the opponent's guard and into grappling / pummeling range. A truly desperate tactic, IMO.

In game terms, this means that someone with nothing to defend themselves with has to evade the incoming blow(s) or simply take the hit (armour, if worn, would then determine if injury ensues). The issue - for this topic - is whether that dodging/evading is best determined as DEFENCE or EVASION.

Cobwebbed Dragon uses the 'house rule' of halving DEFENCE when unarmed and facing an armed opponent. This is perfectly reasonable and, in many cases, will be of a similar level to the character's EVASION. It's just that using EVASION favours Barbarians, while half DEFENCE favours Knights...
(For this specific purpose, EVASION would have to be divided against multiple opponents for reasons I have explained earlier.)
