There was an interesting discussion over on Discord that I thought I would extend to here about what constitutes "canon" Dragon Warriors.

@Daganisoraan had the following suggestion (which I like, hence wanting to preserve it here :)):

Daganisoraan wrote:
1st-level (original material) - 6 books and their new version
2nd-level (old material, side) - what was reprinted in In from the Cold, Bloodsword, any other thing penned by Dave Morris related to DW
3rd-level (licensed new product) - Players' Guide, Reeve's Tale, Fury of the Deep, Knight's Tale, Miller's Tale
4th-level (Fan distribution) - Ordo Draconis, Cadaver, Nomad Khanate, Casket of Fays
5th-level - Your personal version of Legend, which can cancel any or all previous level

Given that Thuland/Brymstone is recently being discussed again, I was idly thinking about how these levels might apply to the Thuland material out there (or that will be out there by February). The Brymstone material is penned (mostly) by Dave Morris and Robert Dale (so level 2?) but the Thuland adventure is licensed new product (level 3) and I think there's some additional fan-produced source material out there (e.g., Thanes) that are level 4. I just hope they're all compatible with each other!

Good way to think about it, I find

Any builds on Daganisoraan's levels of canon?

I quite like that system, although I might not be too prescriptive about it.

If doing stuff for your own game/campaign, then 'Level 5' trumps everything else. It's only when you're planning on publishing material that there has to be some kind of consistency. Without some consistency, the world just becomes a confusing mish-mash of contradictory supplements and stories...

Considering that several people who wrote the 'Level 3' stuff are also contributors to the 'Level 4' stuff, I'm not sure there's such a big difference between the two.

I also hope there's not too much discrepancy between what has already been published and any new stuff coming out. Mind you, I'll probably just end up picking and choosing the bits that most fit my version of Legend. ;)

I'm pretty much a Level 4 through and through as I don't see much difference between the levels for myself. Though I do pick and choose what I use quite a bit from Level 4 I don't tend to use 'house rules' as much as others seem to.

So everyones different but I think mostly on the same page enough that we all seem to be able to play in each others game smoothly enough.

Never been a big believer in "canon"...I can see that there's a certain need for published material not to contradict itself. But even so, not sure that having 6 levels would help an aspiring DW writer very much.

I feel that new source material should fit within existing lore for it to become new material and anything that moves away from that becomes its own separate entity.
