Something Shaun mentioned a while ago has been ticking over in my head, as I couldn't put my finger on why it bothered me at the time. To refresh people's memory...

My version of Ongus, for example, was created because I needed it for my game. Obviously it's unofficial, but being somebody who has read the Players' Guide, I was really happy when I read the details about Ongus in that guide to discover there was nothing in there that contradicted what I'd written. That was happenstance but it does influence what I do online. I would love to write up detailed descriptions of certain areas but I don't want to do so and have them trumped by a later official release - for some reason that matters to me, and it's just further complicated by the fact that it's not impossible I might even be able to pitch for the right to write some of the official material

The background processes that churn in some of the darker recesses of my brain have finally figured out why I didn't follow the reasoning - with the exception of In From The Cold, I don't really consider the new material published by Mongoose or SKG to be canon. I wondered if anyone else thought the same thing?

An interesting question.

I'm not sure I'd use the term canon (although I may have done so in the past in a fairly simplistic way). I would say 'official', perhaps rather than canon.

But I do regard officially released material as separate from fan material, speaking as somebody who is producing both, and I am likely to treat officially released material as important in writing anything 'fan based'. Part of the nature of a roleplaying game is 'Rule 0' - GMs are always free to change anything they like, but I still think there is value in an accepted core.

I also have a little bit of 'behind the scenes' insight into the processes involved in writing some of the new material and the amount of fairly obsessive effort that has gone into making sure we remain true to the 'feel' of Dragon Warriors and the 'feel' of Legend. Whether we got it right or not will be up to people to judge for themselves once they get to see some more of the new material :)

But it's my personal choice to want to match the official material as closely as I can. Not a rule for anybody else.

I consider anything that has Dave Morris' approval to be canon and that includes all the new stuff.

Even my fan stuff I tend to check first to make sure there are no existing contradictions.

I think of canonicity on a spectrum roughly per the below. Some of my reasoning for where things are on the spectrum is quite arbitrary, and of course my own stuff trumps everything, but only for me :D

To my mind, categorising canon material is fairly simple.

* Canon: Anything with official DW branding.
* Non-canon: Anything without official DW branding.

I interpret non-canon material as having various degress of "authority" based on the author, publishing platform and intent. This mirrors the Wiki practice of labelling material either as "semi-canonical" or fan-created material.
