I think there is an earlier version on the wiki. I'll see about moving this into a word file. But since not everyone has this file, I thought I'd stick it heer whilst I work on it.

Things I want to add, percentage failure probability, and also percentage environment will fail what is a perfectly good design, due to meterological or other physical issues. And maybe an unknown, could be refined better catastrophic failure probability percentage that will destroy years work... like a castle, with aconveniently placed underwurlde/sewage entrance that bypasses what is an impregnable defence...

Sapper 0.44...

Wow, not updated since Aug 2015....

180124 - 0.55 version released!
170313 - 0.52 version released!

Thanks Kharille. Can I echo Supremacy' request for a version of the Sapper in a Word format? I'm happy to send you the template I created for The Archer.

Cheers,

-Kyle

I'll put it on word... just need time... backlog of 'to do' things and I'm taking a trip to Macau today.... Maybe once you see the word file version you can decide whether I should put it in that new format...

I'd offer to take do a rough draft for you if I thought there was any chance I'd get it done in less than six months...

Cheers,

Ok, here we have it, 0.45 word file version. I realize I also have many other links that I'd like to add on wiki, historical examples to help you get a feel.

We might need some basic terrain rules. Something like what we have in bloodsword, since the rules of adventuring are so bare.

Minor refinements, addition of other online references and classification according to their origins...

That was an entertaining read. My main comment is that there is a shortage of specifics in the rules, so the profession cannot actually be played at this stage. For instance, the descriptions of the skills do not provide any detailed information on how much can be done by a given person within a given time, how difficult some piece of fieldwork or whatever is and whether it has been a success or not, and how the results are actually to be used. If I wanted to dig a trench how long would it take? If I wanted to make a grenade, how hard would that be and what would the grenade's stats be?

I look forward to the next draft!

Cheers,

-Kyle

Yeah, I know, need to give examples and more stats. I just had all these ideas and crammed them all together. Getting some sort of order on the wiki links took an effort... and my boss is flying back next week so theres no time for 'special projects'....

We have the stats for falling... imagine the carnage caused by concealed pits and the stupidity of massed forces. Maybe some 'baiting' methods too....

Somethings like bridging, really depends on so many variables ... again, what available materials and your ability to manipulate them, the amount of labour available and also avoiding too many dice rolls....

As far as getting useful, nuts-and-bolts information for sapper-type stuff, you could do a lot worse than start with some old field engineering manuals. There are quite a lot on the internet archive (https://archive.org/details/field-technical-manuals is a good starting place) and although you obviously need to account for the fact that these are for 20th century armies (i.e., ignore references to machine guns, barbed wire etc) a lot of the information is directly applicable. You can get an idea of how long excavation takes with pick and shovel, the relative strength of different types of building materials, and a wealth of other things.

Cheers,

-Kyle
