I was re-reading the entry in DW Book 6 about the Rathurbosk Bridge and the following phrase caught my eye:

"Otherwise he will be directed past one of the naming-spires that stand at points throughout the Rathurbosk…"

Does anyone have any idea what Dave Morris meant when he referred to these "naming-spires"? What might they be? And what purpose do they serve?
(I never really thought about this before...)

A French translation has them as "elegant towers of the grand families" - so I surmise that each belongs to one of the powerful clans that control the Rathurbosk.

Though this could just have been an invention of the translator who was also perplexed by the term!

I wouldn't be surprised if that was near the mark... ;)

That's some quality world-building when a throwaway phrase inspires such speculation...but I'm drawing a blank on how such spires could be involved in a process of naming to do with the civic life of the Rathurbosk...seems rather arcane. Each child is brought to one of them at due time to be named? And there are several of them due to caste or clan distinctions?

Interesting idea. Maybe the spires have a platform near the apex? An internal staircase would allow folks to climb to this platform... Then there might be a ceremony where the child is "presented to the Gods" (or the Winds, or something)...
Different spires for different families, castes, tourists...

A response today from Dave Morris:

"Their current use is just to identify different districts. Like street signs. But as for their true purpose... I suspect they're demons, compressed within the spires and bound to maintain the integrity of the structure."

So there you have it. Street signs, but with a sinister edge... :)
