He looks up at you. "Are you going to take Egg away?"

Egg looks down at the ground. The tears are coming again.

" Eggs old enough to think for herself. Who left you here Roger? No vagueness. Who left you? how long ago was that? What did they look like if not like you?"

" Your both more than welcome to stay here and we can come back and you can decide what you want then."

Bretwald turns his back on the scene with Roger and Egg and hurries over to where Sten is attending to Lucky.

Fussing to himself, he looks Lucky over.

Turning to Sten, he says "I believe that his wounds, though severe, will not prove fatal. I do not profess to be a healer but he does not look to be close to the edge of death. Whether we should try to get him to Egham where he can rest and heal or try to attend to him here, that I do not know. I shall pray for him."

The tears come from Roger as he considers what you've said. For a moment all becomes still and chill, the sounds of nature cease and there is a discernable lack of the late summer warmth.

When Roger looks up at you, you can see anger in his eyes. "The men. They left me here. It was a year of hardness, the crops were failing. They thought the gods were angry. So they did what men do when they want to appease the gods. They had a sacrifice."

He looks down again. "Poor Roger. He was little and lame. He couldn't play with the other children. He wouldn't grow into a big, strong man. So they left him here to die.

"Then Roger woke up. He wasn't lame anymore and he could make all the friends he wanted."

Laila nodded, " Thankyou very much, Roger. I appreciate you telling me that."

" How old are you Roger? I'm twenty six."

" When you woke up you were no longer lame? A truly remarkable recovery."

" Father Bretwald would probably call that a miracle."
, she whipered with a wink.

" So what do you think, Roger and Egg? Do you want to stay here in your nice cave until we return?"

Roger looks at you. "Twenty-six. That's a big number. Roger doesn't know how big his number is. It must be very big. I've been here a long time."

Laila frowned.

" How many times has it been winter here since you arrived? One hand? Two hands? Ten hands?"

" Egg? Where did you come from to be here?"

"More hands than here. Many more hands than here.."

Egg hesitatingly tells you that she comes from Igham.

"No! Not Igham, Egg. Egg ham. That's what it's called. Not Igham!"

" Not a problem, Egg."

" Father Bretwald? Could you come over here please."

She looked Roger over carefully to see if she could discern anything more about him.

A Roger'ish Interlude.

What you see when you look at Roger.

If he were a normal boy you might pitch him at a slight seven years old. Nothing out of the ordinary, from a normal Elleslandic boy save:

Wide toothy mouth.
Flappy big ears with a slight point to them.
Skin, that looks like faded parchment.

Bretwald has a brief discussion with Laila and then walks away from her.

The clumsy priest accidentally trips and brushes against Roger.

"How now! What are you doing, you silly bald-pate. You'll come a cropper if you don't look where you put your big old feet. You could have squashed me!"
