Laila eyeballs Sten and considers taking that as a challenge but is unsure how the ljosalfar feel about such things and starts moving off again.

Calder picks up the rock by his feet, and turns it around in his hand.

There is a crudely carved image of a face on the reverse.

Corvin bustles forward and says to Calder ""Well, what have you found Calder? Hold it up so I can see it, there's a good fellow. Father Bretwald shine the lantern this way if you please."

Corvin examines the object if Calder presents it but doesn't touch it himself. He motions for Calder to rotate the object so he can see both sides.

Calder rotates the object around. The reverse is crudely carved as a face. A wide mouthed face, with over-large, almost floppy ears.

" It reminds me of carved stones we have back home, but they are more beardy and less eary."

Looking at the carving, you're reminded distinctly of Roger. Very like Roger,

As the carving gets turned, the nightlife in the forest starts to come alive. It's not a huge hubbub, but it's not quiet anymore.

Corvin looks around nervously, more at home in castle and town than under dark boughs.

"It seems that the stone may have been a door knocker of sorts. The forest has woken to our intrusion. Let's move with purpose along the moolit strand before the creatures of the forest decide we are unwelcome."

Unnerved by the sudden cessation of silence, the party follow the silver thread on through the dark forest. On. And on.

Calder takes the carving with him. He knows not why, but maybe it calls to him. Maybe.

The sound of things creeping through the forest at night around the party is strange, after the stillness of their entrance. Many a time they leap as an odd sound comes from their left, then their right. A bat flies by, and swoops at Bretwald who alarmingly swipes the lantern at it as it flies by. The bark of a dog fox. An odd snuffling.

Tired by their night time trek, the party reach a clearing, as the sun shines its first rays of light.

Chapter 1. Fin.
