'Right then lads, I'm opening this door. We're not going to find treasure standing around here admiring weird spider skulls.'

Arkyn grasps the door handle and turns it.

"Wait!" Swan says, "I heard birdsong ..."

But she doesn't get in Arkyn's way

The handle turns in Arkyn's grip but the door doesn't budge. With a clunk, Arkyn realises the door is locked.

"Well, that's a pain!" Swan says.

"Also, mighty odd. Who would have locked that door behind them after searching for treasure? By my reckoning, no one. So it stands to reason someone else is living down here ... or should I say someone? If we force the door they will probably hear us coming. Maybe we should pick it?"

Swan is happy to put action to these words, though she only has a dagger for a lockpick, and her experience is mostly limited to treasure chests not stout doors. She crouches on knee and tries to turn the lock with the dagger, hoping that it's a simple latch and not some complex tumbler that would need real tools.

Rolls 6+5 for an 11, giving 13 total — would be a success if Swan had the right tools

Swan fiddles around for a while before giving up with a nautical curse. "Devil's dangling barnacles! If I had only paid more attention to one-finger Pete when he'd tried to teach me lockpicking. Does someone else want a go?"

'Did I ever tell you about the time I rescued a princess from a hungry ogre? Chained to the wall she was, with the ogre sharpening his tusks in front of her. Horrible beast he was, so of course I took off both of his heads with my sword. Alas, the manacles around the poor girl's arms proved too much for even my mighty strength. I took one of the ogre's heads and used one of his tusks to open the lock on the chains. I'd still be with the princess if her father hadn't insisted on a more suitable husband.'

Arkyn fetches a deep sigh.

'Anyway, move over and we'll see if I've still got the touch.'

A roll of 8 plus 2 is below Arkyn's skill of 12.

With a quiet clunk and a subtle try at the handle, Arkyn can tell that the door is unlocked.

Betala leans against the wall waiting for the others to unlock it for her, though she is surprised when it is the lad and not her fellow pirte who accomplishes the task.

" Lets head in."
