I was just looking up the Elementalist's Spells (original books) and I read the 3rd Rank Elementalist Spell called 'Fire Arrow'

To cast the spell you must have an enchanted arrow which seems a bit unfair considering Elementalists cannot make magical arrows.

Whats your thought on this, should you have to use an enchanted arrow or should a non-magical one work?

I would follow the book strictly according to the rules. Maybe if they do 2ed they can reevaluate this, but might as well stick to the rules rather than try some balancing.

...well, GM's preference really.... I just figure players can be more adaptable. I wonder whether 'enchantment' could be as easy as getting an elf to sneeze on it. The bloodsword book 2 elf only breathed on the chess board to 'enchant' it...

That essentially means the spell is a white elephant.

A variation would be to be able to turn say six arrows (or equal to your Rank) into +0 arrows of which one is the Fire Arrow but the arrows are subject to SER.

I'd stick to it as RAW.

Keep in mind the enchanted arrow is not consumed by the spell and enchanted weapons are very hard to destroy.

I have in the past allowed the Elementalist to make Fire Arrows for the Hunter beside them, I don't think this breaks anything.

The point is you need a magical item for a third Rank spell. None of the other spells require a magical item. If don’t have a magical arrow you have an unusable spell. The idea of making the arrows enchanted only stops when the spell expires.

The problem for me is that the rules do not state that the arrow is undamaged. Only the caster is unharmed. It almost infers that the arrow (which "flares up with occult flames") is consumed by the spell...

...which really does make it a proverbial 'white elephant' (especially as enchanted arrows aren't exactly run-of-the-mill in Legend?).

Also, the caster is unharmed as he notches it to his bow. Pass the arrow to someone else and they will be hurt.

A nearly useless spell. Fortunately, "Ifrit's Cloak" is there for Mungodan Elementalists...

(I think I have, in the past, done away with the requirement for an enchanted arrow, but the caster does need an actual arrow, the arrow is destroyed by the flames and he has to be the one firing it.)

I think that having a arrow destroyed that is non-magical is a better compromise.

The Elementalist spells were always poorly explained and seemingly underwent limited playtesting. There are many vague descriptions among them, and questionable values.
As they stand, they were always one of the weakest (in terms of writing and robustness of rules) of the DW professions.

It's a shame that the reprints didn't fix these issues - indeed, they ironically exascerbated the already problematic Elementalist with an ill-thought Raw Power rule.

Not a fan of raw power myself. Something more interesting like minor elemental summoning would've been nice.

What about +0 magic arrows? Surely that would be easy to implement? I mean, sure, you'd want to befriend mystics, warlocks and dwarves but surely a 'magic' arrow that does d6,4 to spectres would come in useful? Easier to make and cheaper too? 'Enchantment' is open to definition right?

Possible a limited effect of RAW power is to enchant things with +0
