Hi there, I'm running 'A Shadow on the Mist' for the second time in as many months (the time before that was in the '90s!) and while reviewing my notes I've come across a bit that made me pause in my last session.

||The tomb of Ambrosius is marked 'QUIESCO MANEO CUSTODIO', which I had vaguely translated as something like 'I rest and watch'. But in my October game a player ran it through google and came up with REST STOP WATCH. I can easily change the mock-Latin, but I wondered if there were scholars here who had already properly tranlated the phrase or come up with a better sentence?||

You have to be careful with Google translate, as it can produce some very odd results.
(I frequently use it for translations between English and Russian and quite a few are just plain wrong.)

I have a very, very limited knowledge of Latin, but I would translate "quiesco maneo custodio" as "I rest and remain on guard" or "I rest and keep watch."

I'm deriving that from the famous phrase "quis custodiet ipsos custodes" which literally means "who will guard the guards themselves?" (From Juvenal)

I'm happy to be corrected, btw...

Bacchile doesn't have to be literally Latin. I often use Google Translate to create Latin-like phrases to throw into my game but that aren't quite Latin. I wouldn't want to give a player that knows Latin, but whose character doesn't know Bacchile, too much of an advantage. Indeed, to deter them from meta-gaming too much, I might deliberately use a Latin word that means one thing to mean something slightly (but importantly) different in Bacchile.

This is very true. Selentium isn't Rome, so Bacchile isn't Latin. It's very tempting to get too engrossed in the terms and find ourselves looking for accuracy where there needn't be any.
(It's also fun to see if we can come up with decent Latin...)

Futue te ipsum et caballum tuum!
Feotorem extremae latrinae!
